Autumn Tree

It’s been a while but I managed to grab a couple of hours of plein air painting yesterday. I went out looking for a subject and after a good while I found myself in front of a tree in Greenwich park. It’s Autumnal colours seduced me and so I began.

When working outside we tend to have a window of around two hours before the light changes the nature of the scene we are trying to paint. With that in mind one needs to work fast. I wasn’t concerned with painting every small detail, I was focused on getting the energy, light and colour of the scene before it changed.

First attempts usually need to be adjusted and by the end of the two hours a tree is added, shadows darkened and the warm foliage of the tree increased
